The Basics

CNC Turning rotates the workpiece against a stationary cutting tool. Best for cylindrical parts — shafts, sleeves, bushings, valve stems.

CNC Milling moves a rotating cutting tool against a stationary (or indexed) workpiece. Best for prismatic parts — blocks, brackets, housings, manifolds.

When to Choose Turning

  • Round/cylindrical geometry
  • Shafts, pins, and sleeves
  • Parts with concentric features (bores, grooves, threads)
  • High volume production of round parts

When to Choose Milling

  • Flat surfaces and pockets
  • Complex 3D contours
  • Parts with features on multiple faces
  • Low-volume complex parts
