The Basics
CNC Turning rotates the workpiece against a stationary cutting tool. Best for cylindrical parts — shafts, sleeves, bushings, valve stems.
CNC Milling moves a rotating cutting tool against a stationary (or indexed) workpiece. Best for prismatic parts — blocks, brackets, housings, manifolds.
When to Choose Turning
- Round/cylindrical geometry
- Shafts, pins, and sleeves
- Parts with concentric features (bores, grooves, threads)
- High volume production of round parts
When to Choose Milling
- Flat surfaces and pockets
- Complex 3D contours
- Parts with features on multiple faces
- Low-volume complex parts
