What to Include in a PO to Avoid NCRs

The Problem
Most NCRs trace back to unclear or incomplete purchase orders. When documentation, inspection, and material requirements aren't specified upfront, assumptions fill the gaps — and assumptions lead to non-conformances.
Essential PO Elements
- Drawing revision level — always reference the latest revision
- Material specification — grade, condition, and applicable standard
- Documentation requirements — MTR type, dimensional reports, test certificates
- Inspection requirements — hold points, witness points, third-party inspection
- Surface finish requirements — Ra values, plating, coating specifications
- Marking and packaging — how parts should be identified and protected
