How to Specify 4140 Steel: A Buyer-Friendly Guide
Everything procurement teams need to know about specifying AISI 4140 alloy steel — heat treatment conditions, documentation requirements, and common pitfalls.
What is 4140?
4140 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel widely used for shafts, gears, bolts, valve components, and other parts that need to hold up under cyclic loading. It offers a strong combination of strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance, and it responds well to heat treatment — which is exactly where most specification problems start. "4140" on a drawing describes a chemistry, not a finished mechanical state. Two bars of 4140 bar stock can meet the same chemical spec and still behave completely differently once machined, depending on what condition they're supplied in and what happens to them afterward.
Key Specifications to Include
- Material spec: ASTM A29 / AISI 4140 (confirm whether your application calls for 4140 or 4140H — the H-grade carries tighter hardenability bands and is common in fastener and oilfield applications)
- Condition: Specify heat treatment explicitly — annealed, normalized, or quenched & tempered (Q&T). "4140" alone with no condition called out leaves the supplier to guess, and the as-supplied condition affects both machinability and final part performance
- Hardness range: State the target range rather than a single number — e.g., 28–32 HRC for a typical Q&T condition. A single hardness value with no tolerance window is difficult for any supplier to hit consistently
- MTR requirement: EN 10204 3.1 as a baseline for traceable chemistry and mechanical properties; 3.2 if third-party witnessed certification is required
- Impact testing: Call it out explicitly (e.g., Charpy V-notch at a specified test temperature) if the part sees low-temperature or impact service — it is not implied by a hardness spec

These are typical values, not a substitute for the actual MTR — mechanical properties vary by heat, section size, and the specific tempering temperature used. Always confirm against the certified test report for the material you receive, not a reference table.
Machinability Considerations
Condition has a direct effect on how 4140 cuts. Annealed and normalized material machines more predictably with lower tool wear; higher-hardness Q&T stock (especially above ~35 HRC) demands different tooling, lower speeds, and closer attention to heat generation at the cutting edge. If a part requires extensive machining after heat treatment — deep bores, thin walls, tight tolerances — specifying a lower hardness range or leaving stock for a stress-relief step after rough machining can prevent distortion problems that only show up during final inspection.
Common Mistakes
- Not specifying heat treatment condition, leaving hardness and mechanical properties undefined
- Assuming all 4140 bar stock is interchangeable regardless of supplier or heat
- Not requiring impact testing for parts destined for low-temperature or high-shock service
- Specifying a hardness point rather than a range, making the spec difficult to certify against
- Failing to confirm whether case hardening, nitriding, or another surface treatment is required in addition to through-hardening
What to Ask Your Supplier
- What condition is the bar stock supplied in, and can that be confirmed on the MTR?
- Is chemistry and mechanical property traceability available back to the original heat?
- If quench & temper is required after machining, is that step being coordinated in-house or through a third party, and what documentation comes back with it?
